Review: Something Wicked By Lesley Anne Cowan

Title: Something Wicked
Author: Lesley Anne Cowan
Publisher: Puffin Canada
Published Date: June 2010
Source: Courtesy of the LOVELY Kristen from TorontoWOTS

Sixteen-year-old Melissa’s most recent troubles stem from a secret: her twenty-eight-year-old boyfriend, Michael, has just broken up with her. Even though the relationship is clearly over, Melissa clings to the past, riding a never-ending wave of hope and disappointment. Meaningless sexual escapades, drunken nights, and drug-induced blackouts help her deal with heartbreak, but her pain goes much deeper than her failed relationship. Along with a broken heart, Melissa has to cope with the memories of her younger brother’s death; the non-existent parenting of her insecure, flighty mother; being juggled between social workers and psychologists; and getting kicked out of school and sent to a special program for at-risk youth. So when the cracks in her life threaten to tear her apart, Melissa has to decide whether to keep fighting—or to let go. (Provided by TorontoWOTS)

You can only be strong for so long. 16 year old Melissa seems to be on a path of no return when her and her 28 year old boyfriend Michael split up. First comes the anger than comes the fall. Melissa spirals into a depression and all she does to cope with the loss is let herself into the world of drugs, alcohol and meaningless hook-ups that earns her a bad, BAD reputation. There is help for her and people to listen to what she really has to say but Melissa can’t bring herself to take the offer. Her single mother seems like she could care less about what Melissa is smoking and who she is doing, sometimes all Melissa really needs is for her mom to get her act straight. Emotions run extremely high between Melissa and the people in her life which makes her believe that there really is no hope for a better life. Melissa's future looks blurry, at times a future seems impossible for her. One night, something happens to Melissa that makes her open her eyes for the first time. She's stuck and in too deep of a depression. It's up to her if she wants to give her life another go or if she wants to give up entirely.

Our mistakes do not define us, and I think that's one thing Something Wicked teaches you. Regardless of how you were brought up, you have the ability to do something right for yourself because you deserve it. You must first be willing to let change in. What was really unique about Something Wicked was how daring it was. There were not limits to how far Melissa’s character was willing to go and that allowed for such a bigger storyline.

I rate Something Wicked

Such a bold and vulnerable main character, the story that is told of Melissa is one that points out the darkness of everything that we love, lust, and long for! Both a painful and eye opening read! Something Wicked was something beautiful.

In My Mailbox #1

I've always loved the idea of In My Mailbox! Hosted by the lovely Story Siren, she runs an AMAZING book blog over HERE! Make sure to check her out!
I haven’t determined how often I’m going to do an IMM posting but it would probably be every now and then when I get a few to show you guys! I’d like to show you some of the books I’ll be reading but not necessarily reviewing. They all deserve some face time!
Now here are some of the books I’ve acquired recently:

I’ve heard only great things from ‘the five people you meet in heaven’ so when it went on sale @ Chapters, I had to jump at the opportunity! Along with ‘the five people you meet in heaven’ was Mitch Albom’s similar book, ‘for one more day’. Both about the questions we ask and wonder in the last moments of our lives. Click the covers if you’d like to read the full synopsis!
I first saw Such is My Beloved in my grade twelve English class and read a little bit about it. The synopsis was enough for me to get the book to read! Supporting Canadian Authors =)
How do you pass a book with such controversy? Definitely check it out!
Last for this edition of my IMM, is ‘He’s So Not Worth It’. I haven’t picked up a good, fun, teen chick lit book in a while and this one seemed like a light and easy read!

Leave a comment below on the books mentioned above…any dislikes? LOVES?

As Always,
HAPPY READING

Review: The Perks of Being a Wallflower By Stephen Chbosky

Standing on the fringes of life...
offers a unique perspective. But there comes a time to see what it looks like from the dance floor.

This is the story of what it''s like to grow up in high school. More intimate than a diary, Charlie''s letters are singular and unique, hilarious and devastating. We may not know where he lives. We may not know to whom he is writing. All we know is the world he shares. Caught between trying to live his life and trying to run from it puts him on a strange course through uncharted territory. The world of first dates and mixed tapes, family dramas and new friends. The world of sex, drugs, and The Rocky Horror Picture Show, when all one requires is that perfect song on that perfect drive to feel infinite.

Through Charlie, Stephen Chbosky has created a deeply affecting coming-of-age story, a powerful novel that will spirit you back to those wild and poignant roller coaster days known as growing up.
(Provided By Chapters)

Charlie writes letters to this friend of his who listens to him. The beauty of it all? No judgements and someone is just there to listen to Charlie. Through his first year of highschool Charlie goes through everything from drugs, love, suicide, and family.

He befriends a girl Sam and a guy David who are both seniors. These are the friends Charlie sticks with through his first year of high school. They all are misfits with quirks of there own that make them unique. Only Difference between Charlie and His friends? They know who they are; Charlie on the other hand is struggling hard to figure that out for himself.

Through the diary-esque letters Charlie writes to his friend, we see his rollercoaster of emotions when coming to terms with hardships he is faced with. When he comes to a realization, he writes it down like a lesson was learned which made the perks of being a wallflower so refreshing!

The Perks of Being a Wallflower reminded me a lot of Catcher in the Rye. In the sense that the main characters struggle to deal with the pressures of the society around them. To live Charlie’s life through his letters was so real. I found myself questioning a lot of what I see in my day to day life. The resist and secrets we all have that affect only us. I cannot find words to explain how accurate Chbosky’s words are about growing up the way Charlie had to. No one says it better than himself;

“It was a really great experience. It’s strange to describe reading a book as a really great experience, but that’s kind of how it felt. It was a different book from the others because it wasn’t about being a kid….But it wasn’t like you had to really search for the philosophy. It was pretty straightforward, I thought, and the great part is that I took what the author wrote about and put it in terms of my own life.”

I give The Perks of Being a Wallflower
I definitely recommend this book to those who want an easy read that makes you put your life in perspective…

As Always,
HAPPY READING
